Prince George’s County Police are investigating a shooting in College Park that left a Lanham man dead Sunday morning.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting around 4 a.m. in the 9100 block of U.S. Route 1, according to Prince George’s County police officer Nicole Hubbard.

Once there, officers found 20-year-old David Esequel Avelar, of the 6600 block of 94th Avenue in Lanham, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Avelar was transported to a local hospital where he later died, police said.

According to county police, the homicide is gang-related and stemmed from a party being held at a hotel in the area.

Police said two gang-related groups were attending separate parties in the same hotel when a fight broke out in the parking lot between the two groups.

Marc Limansky, a spokesman for University of Maryland police, said a crime alert was sent out to the university community around 4:20 a.m. since the incident was close to campus. No students or faculty were involved, he said, but they sought to err on the side of caution in case the shooter was traveling toward the campus.

Possible suspects have not yet been identified, police said, and anyone with information is asked to call the police department’s homicide unit at 301-772-4925 or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.
