A Maryland State Police trooper arrested a 17-year-old from Mechanicsville on drug and traffic charges after the boy was pulled over for failing to stop for a flashing school bus sign at 2:44 p.m. Feb. 20.

The officer stopped the youth’s 2004 Hyjndai Tiburon at the intersection of Route 5 at Renner Road in Waldorf.

Sgt. Trossbach of the MSP La Plata Barrack approached the driver of the Tiburon and smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the car.

Trossbach searched the Tiburon and found a significant quantity of marijuana and more than $3,000 in cash. Police also found material indicating the intent to sell marijuana. Trooper Ortiz arrived on scene and handled the arrest.

The boy was taken to the Cheltenham Youth Facility in Cheltenham.
