A fire at 2:20 a.m. Feb. 26 caused $75,000 in damages to a Waldorf liquor store, the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office reported.
The fire at Waldorf Liquors at 2276 Crain Highway was discovered by a Charles County sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol. Surveillance security cameras alerted the monitoring security company of motion in the store. The officer responded and found the fire.
The accidental fire, which started behind the front sales counter, was caused by an electrical malfunction, the fire marshal reported. The fire and smoke caused extensive damage to the inside of the business and much of its contents. The fire marshal estimated the damage to the one-story building at $40,000 and to the store’s contents at $35,000.
Fifty firefighters from the Waldorf, La Plata, Brandywine, Accokeek, Clinton and Allentown volunteer fire departments responded and had the fire out in five minutes.
The fire marshal reported that there were no smoke alarms or sprinklers in the store.
Car set on fire in Nanjemoy
A 2005 BMW that had been reported stolen from the Waldorf area was abandoned and set on fire in Nanjemoy. The car was discovered at 5:12 a.m. Feb. 26 on Hancock Run Road, the fire marshal’s office reported.
The car was owned by Lakie D. Stark. The estimated loss was $17,000.
Five firefighters from the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department had the blaze under control in five minutes.
