After reading the story on homeless students from the warmth of my home, I was aghast at, and embarrassed that this affluent county has not done more [“Schools homeless student count approaching 800,” Maryland Independent, Reb. 15].

The population has increased, but the shelters have not. What a shame.

We need more affordable housing, not McMansions. Maybe the county could purchase a few foreclosures, and volunteers could rehab them for transitional residences.

Don’t hang the homeless to dry on the wrong clothesline. We can do better to end this growing problem.
