I am writing in support of naming the new elementary school in Leonardtown after Capt. Walter Duke. I am a direct descendant and am proud of his achievements at such a young age. I remember growing up in Tall Timbers with a picture of Walter in his military flight uniform hanging in our living room.

Walter Duke’s father was Roland B. Duke, who along with other great St. Mary’s countians was instrumental in starting the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Duke also had a movie theater along with a bowling alley, which is four lanes and still sits atop the Duke’s Restaurant building in the heart of Leonardtown.

I am currently serving time in a Florida prison for bank robbery and have not left my children much to be proud of, but I was proud of Walter Duke and feel he has earned this recognition.
