A propane tanker truck overturned in Waldorf on Thursday morning, forcing road closures and the evacuation of nearby homes.

Elizabeth Campbell, spokeswoman for Charles County Emergency Services, said a call came in just after 9:30 a.m. that a propane truck had overturned on Bensville Road near Carrie Court.

Campbell said it was a single-vehicle accident and that the truck, which can hold 2,000 pounds of propane, was on its side and was leaking.

All valves were closed, and at the time the truck was sealed, Campbell reported it was 85 percent full.

She said there were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Bensville Road was closed from Carrie Court to Zoll Lane.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office reported that Valley Drive, Sedgeland Court, Carrie Court, Shannon Drive, Poplar Court and Paperbirch Court neighborhoods were evacuated.

Campbell said that due to the nature of the crash, the cleanup will take several hours.

Charles County Public Schools’ spokeswoman Katie O’Malley-Simpson said that due to the road closures, the system held morning prekindergarten children from the affected areas at William A. Diggs Elementary School and did not pick up students from the affected areas for afternoon class.

Students in the affected neighborhoods attending North Point High School, Theodore G. Davis Middle School, Matthew Henson Middle School and William A. Diggs Elementary School will be held at their respective schools until a parent can pick them up if roads are still closed at time of dismissal this afternoon, O’Malley-Simpson said.

Some students who attend Archbishop Neale School in La Plata also are being affected, and the school contacted those parents to have them pick their students up at dismissal.

O’Malley-Simpson said the system is working to identify all students in those neighborhoods and that a call and email will be sent out through the automated system.
