A St. Leonard couple was indicted Feb. 26 with charges including arson after they allegedly intentionally set fire to their home in October 2011.

Stephen T. Donahue and Melissa E. Donahue, both 32, of St. Leonard were charged with first-degree arson and insurance fraud.

At 9:27 a.m. Oct. 5, 2011, firefighters responded to a Leonard Court home for a reported fire, according to a Maryland State Fire Marshal’s press release. During the on-scene investigation, fire officials determined a fire was set in the master bedroom of the two-story, single-family home.

The extensive investigation allegedly revealed financial issues were the primary motive behind setting the home on fire, which caused about $85,000 in damage, the press release states. The couple was also charged with insurance fraud for a false claim involving a swimming pool at the home, officials said.

If convicted of the charges, they both face penalties of up to 40 years in prison and/or $60,000 in fines, the press release states.
