The St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks men's basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball National Championship Tournament after an 84-66 victory Saturday night over Morrisville State (N.Y.).

This is the second such appearance for the Seahawks, its first coming in 2011, that visit also under current head coach Chris Harney.

Playing on their home floor, the Seahawks dominated the contest, taking a 5-4 lead at the 18-minute mark of the first half and leading the rest of the way.

Donn Hill finished with a game-high 17 points for the Seahawks, and James Davenport – a member of the 2011 Elite Eight team – added 15 points in the win.

“It all started on October 15, when we were out there on the track,” said Davenport, a red-shirt senior. “I remember two years ago, we went down the same path and traveled the same road. The most important thing is being with these guys and our team chemistry. … These guys made the season for me. This is all that I could ask for.”

Nick LaGuerre added 14 points, Jeff Haus added 13 and Brendan McFall added 11, to round out the St. Mary's double-digit scorers.

“We've won 27 games because they are very coachable, great listeners and they just executed the game plan,” Harney said. “I have a great staff, and I am going to put it on all of the other guys. It's only a little bit of me and my assistant coaches do an incredible job of scouting. It's a team effort all the way up to the top with me.”

The 27 wins overall this season is a new St. Mary's school record for wins in a single season.

The Seahawks also will finish the 2012-13 season undefeated at home at 15-0.

Harney and company will take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va., on Friday night.

Game time has yet to be determined.
