Pax spring luau

Patuxent High School will hold a spring luau at 6 p.m. March 23 at the Lusby American Legion. Dinner will be served and there will be a silent auction. This event is for adults only.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door. Proceeds benefit the Patuxent athletics program.

Panther baseball camp

The Patuxent varsity baseball team will hold a one-day camp from 1 to 4 p.m. March 24 at the Patuxent High School baseball field. The camp is open to children 6 to 14. Calverton Soccer Academy

The Calverton Soccer Academy will hold a spring break soccer skills and competition camp from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 25 to 29 and April 1 to 5 at The Calverton School.

Spring break trainings are structured to give one hour of technical and agility work followed by one hour of game play.

Du The Point duathlon

St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s bike shop and cross country program will hold the first annual Du the Point duathlon at 8 a.m. March 30.

The duathlon will be a 5K run through Historic St. Mary’s City, followed by a 35K bike ride to Point Lookout State Park and back. Participants can opt to run and ride, just run or just ride.

Online registration is open through March 28 at Proceeds will benefiit St. Mary’s County’s Christmas in April.

Panther Open

Patuxent High School will hold its Second annual Panther Open captain’s choice golf tournament at 9 a.m. April 5 at Chesapeake Hills Golf Club in Lusby.

H-town hockey meeting

The Huntingtown High School Hockey Club will hold a meeting for all returning players as well as anyone interesting in playing for the team next season at 7 p.m. April 11 at the school’s cafeteria. St. Charles Running Festival

Area runners have a choice of three races at the St. Charles Running Festival, kicking off at 8 a.m. April 13.

Runners can pick a 10-mile, 5K or kids fun run,w ith all courses beginning at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.

The cost for the 10-mile race is $65, $30 for the 5K and $10 for the fun run.

Spring Fling Tennis Tournament

The Spring Fling Tennis Tournament will be held April 20 and 21 at Cove Point Park in Lusby. The tournament is open to men’s and women’s singles and doubles. For more information, go to

Sabres hockey tryouts

The Southern Maryland Sabres travel ice hockey teams will hold tryouts at the Capital Clubhouse in Waldorf April 30 to May 7.

Squirt tryouts (2003-04) will be held from 6:45 to 8 p.m. April 30 and 6:15 to 7:05 p.m. May 7. PeeWee tryouts (2001-02) will be held from 6:45 to 8 p.m. May 2 and 7:15 to 8:05 p.m. May 7. Bantam tryouts (1999-2000) will be held from 8:10 to 9:25 p.m. April 30 and 8:15 to 9:05 p.m. May 7. Midget tryouts (U-16: 1997-1998 and U-18: 1995-1996) will be held from 8:10 to 9:05 p.m. May 2 and 9:15 to 10:05 p.m. May 7. Players should attend both sessions.

The cost is $50. If selected for a team or if rostered on a rec team, the cost will be applied to the 2013-14 season fees. USA Hockey registration is required.

Soccer camps

The Challenger Sports British Soccer Camps will be held in Calvert County June 24 to 28 and July 8 to 12, in Charles County June 17 to 21, July 15 to 19 and Aug. 5 to 9 and in St. Mary’s County July 29 to Aug. 2.

The camps are available for children 3 to 16.

High school hockey

An ice hockey team comprising Calvert and Patuxent high schools and The Calverton School is currently underway. Players must be at least freshmen in high school. The team would compete in the Southern Conference in the Maryland Student Hockey League along with teams from Northern, Huntingtown and five other Southern Maryland-based teams. Little League baseball, softball

Calvert County’s little leagues are currently holding registrations for the upcoming seasons.

Players who live from Broomes Island Road and south are in the Calvert County National Little League. Players who live primarily in Huntingtown and Prince Frederick are in the Calvert County American Little League. Players north of that and southern areas of Anne Arundel County are in the Northern Calvert Little League.

Baseball and softball eams are available in these leagues for children 4 to 18. Players will be assigned to teams based on their age and skill level. Calvert National will only be offering softball this spring and does not plan on having any baseball teams.

CCPR girls lacrosse

Calvert County Parks & Recreation is now accepting registrations for the 2013 spring season.

There are three areas: Northern area practices at Dunkirk District Park and/or Windy Hill Elementary School, the Central area practices at the Calvert County Fairgrounds and/or Hallowing Point Park and the Southern area practices at Mill Creek Middle School and/or Cove Point Park.

Age divisions include Sticklets (players born 2005-07), U-9 (2003-04), U-11 (2001-02), U-13 (1999-2000) and U-15 (1997-98). Age is as of Aug. 31, 2012.

Alumni football

Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games this spring.Players are needed to sign up and the first 40 players on each team get to play. The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home field advantage.

Teams from Patuxent as well as other area teams are forming now. Gridiron Alumni is targeting more of the biggest rivalries in the nation for its Gridiron Alumni Rivalry Series.

Men’s softball players wanted

An Over-50 independent men’s slowpitch softball league, now in its 10th season, invites players to participate. Games are played on Thursday evenings from May through August at Laurel Grove and St. Clement Shores parks.

This is a four-team league with team assignments by random selection.

Umpires wanted

The Calvert County Officials Association is seeking new and experienced baseball and/or softball umpires to join its organization for the 2013 season.

All umpires must be 16 years old or older. CCOA will conduct rules clinics and training sessions on proper field mechanics prior to the beginning of the spring season. Umpires must provide their own protective equipment and appropriate uniforms. 
All umpires for the 2013 season are required to demonstrate proficiency in rules and regulations by passing a written examination.

Little League umpires needed

Northern Calvert Little League is seeking new and experienced umpires for the 2013 season.

All umpires must be 16 years old or older. The league will provide umpire gear and one umpire shirt for first-year umpires who complete all training and pass the certification test.
