Prince George’s police have made a second arrest in the November 2012 slaying of a Washington, D.C., man who was killed in a drug-related shooting in Seat Pleasant.

Jermaine Benton, 23, of the 4800 block of Benning Road in southeast D.C., was arrested Friday without incident and charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Sharod Darnell James, 31, of the 2200 block of Savannah Terrace in southeast Washington, according to Prince George’s police.

On Nov. 16, 2012, in the 5600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, police responded to the scene just outside the northeast D.C. border to find James suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Police said they first arrested Mahdi Lawson, 24, of the 13000 block of Bishops Bequest Road in Upper Marlboro for the killing. He was charged with second-degree murder after being arrested Nov. 21, 2012.

Detectives on the case said their investigation showed that the incident was drug-related, according to county police.

A defense attorney for Benton was not listed with the courts Saturday, according to online court records. Police said he is being held in D.C. and awaiting extradition to Prince George’s County.

Lawson’s defense attorney, Douglas Irminger, could not be reached for comment Saturday.
