Pedestrian struck by vehicle in Bethesda Tuesday morning -- Gazette.Net

A woman struck by a car in Bethesda Tuesday morning remained in serious condition as of Wednesday evening, according to Montgomery County Police.

Alice Ann Winkler, 50, was walking on Westport Road in Bethesda at about 7:57 a.m. when she was struck by a 2012 Toyota Sienna that was turning from northbound Saratoga Avenue onto eastbound Westport Road, according to a statement from the Montgomery County Police Department.

Winkler, of the 5200 block of Saratoga Avenue, was taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to the statement.

Bob Ladany, a county police spokesman, said Winkler was still at the shock trauma center as of Wednesday evening.

The driver of the Toyota was identified by police as Pablo Martinez Varela, 51, also of the 5200 block of Saratoga Avenue. Varela stayed on the scene after the collision and gave information to police, according to the statement.

The cause of the collision was still under investigation Wednesday. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed or has information about the incident to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers can remain anonymous, according to the statement.
