Rebecca Bridgett has been named as the new county government administrator of St. Mary’s County, the board of county commissioners announced Tuesday.

Bridgett starts the job on April 15 at a salary of $155,000.

John Savich, the former St. Mary’s County administrator, died on Jan. 7 at the age of 60 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Savich held the job since March 7, 2007. Sue Sabo, director of the St. Mary’s County Department of Human Resources, will return to those duties after having served as acting administrator.

Bridgett was the Charles County government administrator until June 26, 2012, when a majority of the Charles County commissioners voted to cancel her employment contract during a closed-door session.

“I left county government in July 2012,” she said Tuesday afternoon of her departure. “My last day there was July 13, then I started with the sheriff’s office July 16, so I just took the weekend off.”

She served as Charles County administrator for three years, worked as acting human resources director with their sheriff’s office for the past eight months.

“I think Charles County’s loss will be our gain,” St. Mary’s County Commissioner Larry Jarboe (R) said Tuesday. “It’s wonderful to see a woman in the position ... but she rose to the top based on her qualifications.”

Bridgett is the first woman hired as the St. Mary’s County administrator.

“For everyone who worked on this process, a job well done,” said Jack Russell (D), president of the St. Mary’s County commissioners. The vote to hire Bridgett was 5-0.

Bridgett is already a resident of Charlotte Hall. The county administrator is required to live in St. Mary’s.

“Dr. Bridgett has had great success in developing and implementing strategic plans and her results-oriented leadership will bring many exciting opportunities to St. Mary’s County,” Russell said in a statement. “We are excited to have her as our key executive.”

In addition to being Charles County administrator, Bridgett was also director of the Charles County Department of Social Services, acting executive director of the Social Services Administration of the Maryland Department of Human Resources and a member and chair of the board of education.

She holds a doctor of education degree from NOVA Southeastern University and a master’s degree in special education from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
