A serious car crash blocked entry to Cobb Island on Thursday.
Students from La Plata High School and Piccowaxen Middle School who live on the island are being held at Piccowaxen.
The Maryland State Police confirmed that a serious accident occurred on Route 257 and Cobb Island Road about 12:45 p.m. Police didn’t release any further details by 3 p.m.
Katie O’Malley-Simpson, spokeswoman for Charles County Public Schools, said the school system was notified that the road to Cobb Island was blocked due to the accident. O’Malley-Simpson said students who live on the island and attend La Plata and Piccowaxen will be held at the middle school until a parent can pick them up.
School staff is notifying the parents of those being held at the school.
O’Malley-Simpson said Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School had not yet dismissed, and the school system would determine how to handle students from Higdon who live on the island if the road were still closed at the time of its 3:40 p.m. dismissal.
