The U.S. Post Office building at 7001 Arlington Road in Bethesda now is a pile of rubble thanks to William V. Walsh Construction Company Inc., a Chicago-based company that has an office in Chevy Chase.
Rising out of that rubble will be a modern-looking multi-use building, originally dubbed Dwell Bethesda and now being called 7100 Arlington Road. The five-story complex will have 7,000 square feet of retail space on the first floor, according to the preliminary plan filed with the county in April 2012, with 140 apartments on the top four floors. A parking garage will offer 230 spots, and there will be two triangular-shaped courtyards on the first floor for residents to enjoy, said Mike Handza, the project manager.
The developer of the project is Associated Estates Realty Corporation, based in Ohio. Associated bought the post office property on March 30, 2012, according to a company news release.
The property backs up to the Capital Crescent Trail, a paved hike-and-bike trail, to which residents will have their own access, Handza said. He estimated the move-in date to be August 2014.
