Frederick County Public Schools are closing Urbana Middle School at 12:30 p.m. today due to hot classrooms after the air conditioning system failed.
“The building was getting a little hot so we decided [to dismiss],” said Michael Dorrer, FCPS spokesperson. “Our concern is that the school building is a comfortable learning environment for our students.”
School officials were still trying to determine the cause of the air conditioning failure.
“Our folks will be out evaluating the situation,” Dorrer said.
The school will serve lunch to the students before dismissal.
Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 86 degrees in the county today, with scattered showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Dorrer said that the system has not made a determination yet as to whether or not the school will reopen for class tomorrow. He recommended that parents check www.fcps.org for updates.
