Joseph “Tony” St. Clair (D) filed Tuesday as a candidate for St. Mary’s County commissioner for the 2014 election.
It was the first day for candidates for file their intentions with the on Tuesday with the board of elections.
St. Clair is running for the District 3 county commissioner district, which represents northern St. Mary’s County. That seat is currently held by Commissioner Larry Jarboe (R), but term limits say he can not run again after 12 consecutive years in office.
St. Clair challenged Jarboe unsuccessfully in the 2006 election.
A resident of Avenue, St. Clair serves as the chairman of the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission, which oversees public water and sewer systems, though his membership on the board could end as soon as this week as a new MetCom director is chosen, he said. He also served on the St. Mary’s County Planning Commission for three years, and was chairman in 2006, his last year on the planning board.
St. Clair, 63, said he chose to become a formal candidate on the first day of filing because “it really takes a longer period of time for people to get to know who you are and what the issues really are. We felt the timing was right.”
Among the reasons he decided to run again were “lengthy permitting processes, increased taxes, budget cuts, unfunded state mandates, costly environmental and other legislation coming out of Annapolis, gun rights issues and lack of accountability in state and local government,” he said in a statement.
“These things threaten the way of life in St. Mary’s County and it’s time our residents have a commissioner who puts their concerns first when dealing with today’s challenges,” he said.
“The day I become county commissioner, I want to be able to hit the ground running,” he said in an interview Tuesday.
St. Clair is a retired farmer and businessman who owns and operates Picker’s Paradise, an antique store in Hollywood. He is also the owner of St. Clair Enterprises, a property management company that owns and leases warehouse space to businesses.
