The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a man who died after a stack of lumber weighing “several hundred pounds,” according to police, fell on his head.
Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said that at 3:43 p.m. April 24 in the 9200 block of W&W Industrial Park Road in La Plata, the location of a Facchina Group of Cos.’ storage facility, 36-year-old Walter J. Rodriguez was struck in the head with a large stack of plywood that Richardson said apparently fell from a pallet it was stacked on.
Rodriguez, of Accokeek, was transported to Civista Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Richardson said sheriff’s officers and representatives of Maryland Occupational Safety and Health investigated the incident.
The investigation is continuing, she said.
Ronn Filley, director of human resources and IT services with Facchina, said Wednesday’s incident was a tragic accident.
He said Rodriguez had worked for the company for 15 years.
“We’re deeply saddened by the loss of a member of what we consider a close-knit Facchina family,” Filley said.
He said the company is working to find out exactly what caused the accident and is focused right now on taking care of Rodriguez’s family.
Filley said Facchina is cooperating with the authorities involved in investigating the incident.
