Cheer coaches needed

The Southern Maryland Youth Association Hawks Cheerleading Program is seeking coaches for the 2013 season.

Women’s golf clinics

White Plains Golf Course will hold two women’s golf clinics.

Session I will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. May 1 and 2, while Session II will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. May 6 to 9.

Registration is required. Maximum class size is eight participants. Golf clinic participants will receive a complimentary round of golf.

White Plains Golf Course is located on St. Charles Parkway, south of DeMarr Road.

Fishing tournament

The annual spring Fishin’ Buddies Tournament at Gilbert Run Park is scheduled from 7 a.m.. to 12:30 p.m. May 4.

The tournament is set up in a team format, with one adult at least 21 and one child 6 to 15 needed on every team.

Trophies will be awarded in two age categories, and anglers will be further separated by boat and bank fishermen. All teams are eligible for the many door prizes.

The cost is $7 per team. The deadline to register is at noon May 1.

Registration forms can be picked up at Gilbert Run Park or the main office of the Department of Public Works on Radio Station Road in La Plata, or call 301-932-3470 or 301-870-2778 during normal business hours.

Softball tournament

A double-elimination softball tournament will be held May 11 and 12 at Brass Rail Sports Bar field in Great Mills. The cost is $100. For more information, call Bret Gavin at 240-375-3298.

Farming 4 Hunger 5K

Farming 4 Hunger is teaming up with Calvert Memorial Hospital and its partners to sponsor a 5K walk/run on May 11 at Serenity Farms in Benedict to raise funds that will be used to grow produce for area food pantries.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. with the race to begin at 9 a.m.

The cost is $30 through May 1 and participants will be guaranteed a race T-shirt. The cost is $40 on race day. Children 12 and younger are free.

Heritage Bike Ride

The 12th annual Heritage Bike Ride will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18, beginning and ending at the Nanjemoy Community Center.

Three recreational routes are available: 100K, 50K and 25K. The cost for residents is $25 and $27 for nonresidents. There is an additional cost of $5 if registering the day of the event.

Alumni football

Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games this spring.

Players are needed to sign up and the first 40 players on each team get to play. The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home field advantage.

Teams from North Point, Thomas Stone and Westlake as well as other area teams are forming now. Gridiron Alumni is targeting more of the biggest rivalries in the nation for its Gridiron Alumni Rivalry Series.
