The body of a Virginia man who took part in an overnight fishing trip last week at Myrtle Point Park in St. Mary’s County was found Sunday morning, authorities report, in the Patuxent River.

Selvin Vasquez, 22, of Alexandria, Va., and three or four companions arrived at the park after closing time Wednesday night, a senior investigator said, adding that after their night of fishing, Vasquez went into the water for a “quick swim” at about 5 a.m. Thursday, and disappeared.

Vasquez’s companions tried to find him on their own, and it was late Thursday afternoon when his family contacted authorities, the investigator said. Maryland Natural Resources Police and a Maryland State Police helicopter crew took part in an initial search, and Vasquez’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy after it was recovered Sunday.
