A Hughesville man was flown to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot Sunday afternoon.

At 1:30 p.m. June 23, Charles County sheriff’s officers responded to the 7400 block of Leonardtown Road in Hughesville after someone called to report a shooting.

According to information from Diane Richardson, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, officers arrived at the home and found a 28-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso.

The victim was able to describe the shooter and tell officers that a blue Nissan passenger car pulled up to the back of the house where he was standing and the person in the car, who was alone, fired shots at him before driving off.

The victim was flown to Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly.

After further investigation and gathering information from people at the home, officers linked the blue car to Shane Ryan Barnett, 28, of Charlotte Hall.

According to charging documents, officers met with Barnett’s father in the driveway of his Charlotte Hall home and the father confirmed that Barnett had been driving his mother’s blue Nissan earlier that day.

Barnett’s father led the officers to the house, and as they approached, they noticed Barnett leaving in a red Hyundai, according to charging documents.

Officers stopped the car and attempted to hold Barnett at the scene, but according to reports, he broke free from officers and tried to run.

After a brief chase, Barnett was caught, subdued with an electric stun gun and arrested, the documents state.

Barnett later confessed to his involvement in the shooting, police said.

He said he learned of an altercation between the mother of his 3-year-old son and the victim, who officers learned were in a relationship.

Barnett told police that he heard the victim assaulted the woman and pushed Barnett’s son.

Barnett said that after he learned where the victim was, he went and shot him.

According to charging documents, Barnett told officers where he stored the gun after the shooting.

Barnett was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault and use of a firearm in commission of a felony and crime of violence.
