A Silver Spring man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother at The Chateau apartment building Friday, Montgomery County Police said.

Police said they found Esperanza Valle, 50, with multiple stab wounds to her body and detained her son, Fidel Washington, 25. Valle and Washington lived in the same apartment.

Washington has been charged with first-degree murder. Police said Washington told them he and his mother had argued about him not having a job.

A bail hearing scheduled for Monday afternoon was postponed to July 10 pending a mental health examination.

Valle had not been heard from for several days when her coworker called the police to investigate, said Capt. Jim Daly, a police spokesman. Police found a body in the apartment along with Washington on the scene at about 8 a.m. Friday.

According to online court records, Washington’s preliminary hearing is set for July 26 at 10 a.m. Attorney information for Washington was not immediately available.

The Chateau is 9727 Mt. Pisgah Road in Silver Spring.
