A teenager was found hanging in his cell at the St. Mary’s jail early Saturday morning, investigators report, and he remained in a hospital at midday Monday.

The 19-year-old man, whose name was not released, had been in pretrial custody since May at the detention center, according to investigators, and no one else was in the cell with him when correctional officers making their rounds at 1:28 a.m. Saturday discovered him.

“The inmate was unresponsive,” an investigator said. The correctional officers began resuscitation efforts and were soon joined by an ambulance crew.

“They found him, and may have saved his life,” the investigator said. “We still don’t know.”

The matter is being investigated by St. Mary’s detectives and the sheriff’s office internal affairs bureau. No information was released on the teenager’s medical condition.
