Artists in northern Montgomery County will soon have a new place to gather and be part of an artistic community.
The Art Connect, at 15138 Barnestown Road, Boyds, will host a reception to celebrate its opening from 3 to 6 p.m. July 14.
Owner Youngsun Jun said the event will feature photography, watercolors and jewelry from four or five artists.
This will be the first event for the gallery, but Jun said she hopes to have events every few months.
A writer and photographer, she said she wanted to provide artists with an outlet for their work and creative passions.
She moved to Maryland last fall from Hawaii and fell in love with the yellow house in Boyds where she’s opening the gallery, she said.
Jun, 32, said there’s a strong culture in Hawaii of supporting local artists, and the island where she lived was dotted with small businesses and cafes.
Her parents also ran a small restaurant in South Korea, where Jun lived until moving to the U.S. at 22.
The personal connection is really important to art, Jun said, and people want to know the artists and where the art that they’re buying comes from.
“I just feel that’s something that needs to be protected and preserved,” she said.
