A Virginia man died Sunday night when the car he was driving went off Route 235 in Hollywood, police report, and an injured passenger was taken to a hospital.

Alfonso Eduardo Vayra, 61, of Fairfax, Va., was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene of the 8:16 p.m. crash, according to Maryland State Police.

A Hollywood ambulance crew took the injured 59-year-old passenger, also from Fairfax, to the Prince George’s Hospital Center, according to a St. Mary’s dispatch log, because emergency helicopters were grounded due to weather conditions.

Police report that their preliminary investigation indicates that speed was a factor in the collision, which occurred near the highway’s intersection with Jones Wharf Road.
