Volunteer firefighters responding to a house fire Tuesday morning in Hollywood found an unconscious man in the residence, state investigators report, and he later died at a hospital from his injuries.

David R. Allen, 55, was discovered near a laundry room on the ground floor of the two-story dwelling off Sotterley Road, according to the state fire marshal’s office. Emergency crews initiated CPR efforts before Allen was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

About 40 Hollywood, Bay District and Leonardtown firefighters responded to a 3:41 a.m. alarm that day and brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes after their arrival, the fire marshal’s office reports. The fire caused damages estimated at $60,000 to the home and its contents.

Allen, from Wales in the United Kingdom, was living in St. Mary’s as he worked for a contractor at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, according to a spokesperson for the fire marshal’s office.

St. Mary’s detectives are taking part in the investigation of the cause of the fire. The Washington, D.C., Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of Allen’s death.
