Residents without air conditioning welcomed to designated cooling centers
The three St. Mary’s County libraries are open as usual today, Thursday, July 18, but have been designated as cooling centers for those who do not have air conditioning.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory today from noon to 7 p.m., warning the temperature and humidity will make it feel like 105 degrees.
The three libraries will be open until 8 p.m. Thursday.
The Charlotte Hall library is located at 37600 New Market Road in Charlotte Hall. The Leonardtown library is at 23250 Hollywood Road in Leonardtown and the Lexington Park library is at 21677 FDR Boulevard in Lexington Park.
The libraries may be used as cooling centers again on Friday, July 19, and will close at 5 p.m.
“The biggest concern is with the elderly, to make sure they have a place to go,” said Tony Jones, public information officer for St. Mary’s County government.
