AP Chemistry books up for review

St. Mary’s public schools is in the process of adopting a new textbook for use in Advanced Placement Chemistry classes at Chopticon, Great Mills and Leonardtown high schools. The textbook, titled “Chemistry: The Central Science, 12th edition,” by Brown, Lemay, Burtsen, Murphy, and Woodward, is available for public review at the Leonardtown public library until July 26. Liverman, Butner earn educator grants

Abbey Liverman, a graduate of Chopticon High School, has been selected to receive the 2013 Frances Lancaster Education Grant from the Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She is the daughter of Heath and Donna Liverman, and will attend St. Mary’s College of Maryland to become a mathematics teacher.

A secondary grant for one year was awarded to Rebecca Butner, a graduate of Great Mills High School. She is the daughter of Clark Butner Sr. and Kimberly Butner of Great Mills and has enrolled at the College of Southern Maryland to major in early childhood education.

Delta Kappa Gamma is an international society of women educators. Liverman and Butner are two of five students who will receive financial support from Alpha Beta Chapter for the school year 2013-2014. Grant applications are available annually to all Calvert and St. Mary’s high school seniors who are planning to pursue a college degree with the goal of becoming a teacher.
