The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting that sent one man to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
At approximately 4 p.m. July 31, sheriff’s officers answered a call reporting a possible shooting in the 2500 block of Lake Drive in Waldorf.
Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said when officers arrived they found a man near a pool at the apartment complex with a gunshot wound.
Richardson said the man, 27, of Waldorf and a witness said the man was at the pool when he was shot. He said he did not know who shot him or where the shot came from.
During an investigation, Richardson said evidence detectives and officers gathered from the scene “did not match up with what the victim and the witness said.”
Officers learned that the victim and the 21-year-old witness shared an apartment.
Richardson said the two men were inside the apartment handling guns when a shotgun went off, striking the victim in the upper body.
Richardson said the two men left the apartment and several people called 911.
The man was flown to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Richardson said charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
She said at this time it appears it was an accidental shooting and the initial story the two men gave was not true.
