The residents and workforce of Tysons Corner now have a new option for picking up groceries — and pretty much anything else they might need.

A new, urban-style Walmart store opened its doors to the public for the first time on Wednesday morning.

Store manager Marty Reighard said the grand opening drew more people than he expected. Customers he spoke with are excited to have a grocery and shopping option closer to where they live, he said.

“I think people are just happy to have an option period,” he said. “Even to go to the Harris Teeter can take 20 minutes.”

There were Tysons-area residents who had been going to Alexandria or Chantilly to shop at Walmart, Reighard said.

The 80,000-square-foot store is a Walmart Supercenter, meaning it has a grocery store. It has all of the same departments that you would find at a 200,000-square-foot floor Walmart store, Reighard said, just laid out a bit differently and in a smaller space.

As one of a small number of urban footprint Walmart stores around the country, the Tysons store will also serve as a site to test out new services and options. For example, Reighard said the store will have grab-and-go lunch options in the deli to serve the office lunchtime crowds in Tysons.

“That’s something that Walmart has never done before and we’re doing it here for the first time,” he said.

The new store employs about 200 people.

The Walmart is part of developer JGB Rosenfeld Retail’s Tysons West development, located directly across Route 7 from the Spring Hill Metro Station.

The first phase of the project includes the Walmart, a 24 Hour Fitness gym, several restaurants and about 30,000 square feet of office space.

In September, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on a more comprehensive redevelopment plan for the site, which will include a residential component.
