One or more culprits set off an improvised explosive device Saturday night at the base of a concrete mailbox pad at the intersection of Great Mills Road and Forest Run Drive in Lexington Park, state investigators report, resulting in $500 damage.

Bay District volunteer firefighters dispatched to the scene shortly after 9 p.m. and had the matter under control within one minute after their arrival, according to a notice of investigation filed by deputy state fire marshal Melissa Bean.

Saturday’s incident followed the discovery of an improvised explosive device detonated behind Nicolletti’s Restaurant off Route 235 in California last Wednesday night, resulting in $5,000 damage to a parked vehicle and the surrounding grounds.

The fire marshal’s office has requested that anyone with information about the incidents call the investigators at 443-550-6834.
