Two people taken hostage Thursday morning
One man was taken into custody without incident after police responded to a barricade situation at a home on Heather Lane in Huntingtown where an adult man was holding two people hostage.
Capt. Steve Jones of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said patrol units, hostage negotiators and members of the Special Operations Team responded to the Heather Lane home after police received a “check welfare” call at about 8:10 a.m. Thursday because a man was “being incoherent and not acting normal.”
A man in his 40s was making threats that he was going to harm his brother-in-law and his father-in-law, who were inside the house, Jones said.
A barricade was set up and Emmanuel Church Road at Heather Lane and Emmanuel Church Road at Wilson Road were shut down, according to a Nixle alert sent at 8:50 a.m.
S.O.T. members entered the house and “extracted one person,” the man’s brother-in-law, from the basement, Jones said, but the man’s father-in-law was still inside. Police then located the man in the kitchen and “took him into custody without incident” just before 10 a.m., Jones said.
Jones said he does not believe the man had any weapons but that there were weapons inside the house. No injuries were reported.
Jones said criminal charges are not being filed against the man, who was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
