A Calvert Elementary School student was taken to the emergency room following a school bus accident Thursday morning, according to Ed Cassidy, director of transportation at Calvert County Public Schools.

A school bus was transporting students to Calvert Elementary when it came to a complete stop at a bus stop, Cassidy said Friday. The bus was then hit from behind by another car. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, along with Kevin Jackson, the school’s vice principal, and Cassidy, arrived at the scene to assess the situation, according to Cassidy.

Students were taken to school and evaluated by the school nurse. Cassidy said school staff notified parents of the incident and sent students home with a note at the end of the day. At the school, a parent decided to take their child to the emergency room, and the student was transported by ambulance, he said.

The accident occurred one day after students on a bus headed to Appeal and Patuxent elementary schools were involved in a school bus incident. According to Cassidy, a school bus was making a three-point turn at Deadwood Drive and Carlesbad Court at approximately 8:54 a.m. Aug. 28, and the side of the bus scraped against a parked trailer. The sheriff’s office and Cassidy responded to the scene, students were taken to school and no one was injured, he said.

Cassidy said the transportation department has an accident review committee that reviews details of every accident with the bus driver. Cassidy said any re-training between the transportation department and bus drivers will be discussed there.

A third school bus accident involving Calvert County students also occurred last week, when a bus transporting eighth-graders from The Calverton School, a private school in Huntingtown, was involved in an accident in White Plains while on the way to Colonial Williamsburg on Aug. 28. Two students and a teacher were taken to the hospital and released with minor injuries, according to police and school officials.
