A Great Mills woman who died Sunday night after she walked in front of a van on a highway was remembered this week as a good neighbor, as police investigate the accident that occurred near the scene of a party south of Lexington Park.
Shirley Jordan, 63, died at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital after the 9 p.m. accident that occurred near Route 235’s intersection with Mattapany Road, according to St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies. No injuries to the van’s driver, 43-year-old Cong Nguyen of Virginia, were reported from the collision.
“There was some kind of an event, a party going on at somebody’s house,” a senior sheriff’s deputy said this week, adding that Jordan “was crossing the street to get to her car.”
Neither alcohol nor the van’s speed appear to be contributing factors in the accident, the sheriff’s office reported from the preliminary investigation.
Jordan had lived for about two years at an apartment building off Chancellor’s Run Road, where a neighbor remembered Jordan on Monday for her generosity.
“She was always a kind person,” the neighbor said during a call to her home. “If you were the kind of person who needed help, she didn’t mind helping. She went out of her way.”
The sheriff’s office has requested that anyone with information about the accident call deputy Christopher Beyer at 301-475-4040.
