Indian Head man found dead in La Plata

By GRETCHEN PHILLIPS

Staff writer

Cameron Taylor sat on a curb Monday morning near a memorial set up for his cousin, who was shot and killed Saturday night. Taylor said it was hard to believe that someone he had texted with four days before was now dead.

“He was a good person,” Taylor said about Melvin Wayne Brown, 31, of Indian Head. Taylor said Brown was commonly known as “Silkk.”

At 11:50 p.m. Sept. 7, police officers from the town of La Plata and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office answered calls reporting gunshots near Popes Creek Court in La Plata.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said that when police arrived, they found Brown lying between two cars in the 600 block of Pomonkey Way in the Phoenix Run neighborhood. He had been shot more than once and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating the shooting. Richardson said Monday that police are still working on establishing a motive. At this point in the investigation, Richardson said, a motive “is simply not clear.”

Taylor, of Bryans Road, said Brown wasn’t perfect but was well-known in the community. His death, Taylor said, is “going to impact the whole county.” Taylor said Brown would have cookouts every Sunday for the community.

Over the weekend, a memorial was placed at the location of Brown’s death with balloons, stuffed animals, flowers and empty bottles of alcohol. One balloon read, “You’re so special.” Another balloon had a handwritten message.

Richardson said Brown’s death marks the second homicide in Charles County this year.

The first was May 16 on the 11800 block of Oak Manor Drive in Waldorf. Jessica Stith, 25, was found dead inside her home after a dispute with a neighbor. She died of multiple stab wounds, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Richardson said that the case is being reviewed by the state attorney’s office.

She said that anyone who has information on Brown’s death is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 301-934-2222.
