In the past five days, three people have died in traffic fatalities in Charles County. Since February, 13 people have died in traffic-related accidents.

An early-morning crash Monday involving a motorcycle in White Plains claimed two lives.

According to information provided by the Maryland State Police La Plata barrack, at 2:16 a.m. Sept. 16, a motorcycle traveling north on U.S. 301 just north of Route 227 hit the back of a tractor-trailer traveling in the same direction. The truck had stopped for a red light.

MSP reported that the two people on the motorcycle, driver Tyrone Anthony Matthews Jr., 22, and passenger Ian Gregory Armstrong, 24, both of La Plata, were thrown off the Yamaha YZF-R1 motorcycle and died on the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Charlie Ray Hood, 58, of Mount Holly, Va., was not injured, police reported.

The men on the motorcycle were taken to the office of the chief medical examiner in Baltimore.

The investigation is continuing.

MSP released Monday the name of the man who died in a Thursday evening crash.

At 11:07 p.m. Sept. 12, MSP went to Route 5 at Mattawoman-Beantown Road, north of Substation Road, to answer a call reporting the crash.

Troopers reported that a white Ford F-150 driven by Clayton Silvester Wood, 50, of La Plata overturned when the truck ran off the roadway. Troopers reported that Wood was not wearing a seat belt and was the only person in the truck.

Wood was pronounced dead at the scene.
