A school bus carrying students was rear-ended Friday morning in Hughesville. No major injuries werereported.

At 8:37 a.m., the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and emergency personnel were called to the intersection of Route 231 and Route 381 — Aquasco Road — in Hughesville for an accident involving a school bus.

The bus was carrying students to T.C. Martin Elementary School and two students to St. Mary’s Bryantown School.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said the preliminary investigation indicates that the bus was slowing down as it was headed west on Route 231 when a Nissan Maxima driven by a 49-year-old woman rear-ended it.

The woman was transported to University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Charles County Public Schools spokeswoman Katie O’Malley-Simpson said it was unclear from initial reports how many students were on board. She said it appeared no students were injured when emergency personnel responded, but all students were transported to the medical center via a second bus to get checked out.

O’Malley-Simpson said while it is believed there were no injuries, students were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

O’Malley-Simpson said the driver of the bus was OK.

The investigation is continuing.
