A Virginia man crossing the road near Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek pushing a golf cart was struck by a truck and killed Thursday evening.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 7:40 p.m. Johnny Durtche, 51, of Dumfries, Va., was helping several people push a golf cart across Budds Creek Road from the raceway. The golf cart and other people stopped in the roadway due to oncoming traffic. However, Durtche continued into the path of a 2008 Ford F350 headed west and driven by James Webster Tayman III, 28, of Mechanicsville. Durtche was hit by the truck and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The sheriff’s office collision reconstruction team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be contributing factors on the part of the truck driver, according to the sheriff’s office. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact deputy William Watters at 301-475-4200, ext. 9114.
