A single vehicle accident left a woman dead and two children injured Tuesday morning.
Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said that at 8:40 a.m. Oct. 8, a 30-year-old woman was driving a Buick Regal on Parkway Substation Road in La Plata when she lost control of the car and struck a tree head on.
Richardson said the woman was flown to a hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
Richardson added that police are not releasing the woman’s name until her family has been notified.
Two children were in the car — a girl, 5, and a boy, 6.
Both children were flown by helicopter to a hospital and Richardson said their injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
The woman was not wearing a seat belt and officers are looking into the possibility that speed was a contributing factor, Richardson said.
The accident happened a quarter-mile from the woman’s home and investigators believe she was driving her children to their school bus stop, Richardson said.
Police are continuing to investigate.
