A man died, and two other people were injured in a single-vehicle crash Friday in La Plata.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office reported that at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18, Gabriel William Maxwell, 22, of Waldorf was driving a Chevy Colorado south on Turkey Hill Road when he lost control of the pickup truck at a curve and struck a tree.
Maxwell was pronounced dead on the scene.
Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said there were two passengers in the truck at the time of the crash.
A 17-year-old boy from Hughesville and Anthony Hyshaw, 19, of Waldorf were flown to a hospital.
Richardson said the 17-year-old was in critical condition, and it appeared Hyshaw had injuries that were not life-threatening.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, she said.
She said it appeared Maxwell and Hyshaw were wearing seatbelts, and the 17-year-old was not.
Maxwell’s mother, Lynn Maxwell, said, “He was our world. He was our joy.”
Lynn Maxwell said her son loved music and was a good guitarist.
Maxwell’s friend Stephanie Chase said Maxwell was “one of the most amazing people you’ll ever meet in your life.”
Chase, of Nanjemoy, said Maxwell’s family and friends meant a lot to him and that he “would give you the shirt off his back.”
Richardson said officers are investigating whether speed and/or alcohol were factors in the crash.
