A Hughesville man was arrested Friday for arson of a Hughesville home on Helen Fowler Place, the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office reported.
Lawrence Richard Beuchert, 42, stopped his vehicle Oct. 11 on Fowler Brothers Place in Hughesville. Beuchert, the lone occupant of the car, said he was supposed to meet “John Boy” at the residence he set fire to, according to charging documents. Beuchert claimed he had gotten into an accident trying to light a cigarette and needed help.
Beuchert was seen leaving the woods near the structure he allegedly set ablaze, and two gasoline containers were found in the woods, according to charging documents.
The fire, which caused about $5,000 in damage to a one-story, wood-frame, single-family house, was discovered by neighbors and reported to authorities.
Beuchert was charged with first-degree arson, third-degree burglary and malicious destruction of property.
The investigation is continuing, and anyone with information is asked to call 443-550-6820.
Beuchert was being held at the Charles County jail on $50,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 15 at the Charles County courthouse.
