The 17-year-old who was critically injured in last week’s car crash in La Plata died Wednesday evening.
Micah Enstrom of Hughesville died from injuries sustained in the single-vehicle accident on Turkey Hill Road in La Plata.
At 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18, Gabriel William Maxwell, 22, of Waldorf was driving a Chevy Colorado south on the roadway when he lost control of the pickup truck at a curve and struck a tree, police reported.
Maxwell was pronounced dead on the scene.
Enstrom and Anthony Hyshaw, 19, of Waldorf were flown to a hospital.
Officers reported that Enstrom was in critical condition, and it appeared Hyshaw had injuries that were not life-threatening.
Enstrom’s grandfather, Marvin Harris, said at 4 a.m. Thursday morning he received a phone call informing him that Enstrom had saved four lives, having donated his organs.
Harris recalled recently going with Enstrom to get a temporary identification card and Enstrom discussing with him that he wanted to be an organ donor. Enstrom’s grandmother, Dona Harris, said she, too, remembers talking with Enstrom about organ donation.
Dona Harris recalled asking why her grandson wanted to donate his organs.
She remembered Enstrom saying, “Why wouldn’t I? Isn’t that something everyone should do?”
Enstrom’s grandparents, with whom he had been living in recent years, said Enstrom was a young man with a lot of energy and someone who was quick to help out family and friends.
Marvin Harris said the day of the crash, Enstrom was out in the yard raking leaves and trimming hedges. He had also washed and waxed his grandmother’s car.
Both grandparents said Enstrom was good at skateboarding. He played guitar and helped out a lot at Fellowship Church in White Plains where Marvin Harris is pastor.
“He was a friend to everyone,” Marvin Harris said.
Enstrom was in the process of getting his GED, and Dona Harris said he was good with electronics and just about everything he took an interest in.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to information from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
