Charles County police are looking for someone who possibly had a handgun on a community college campus in La Plata Monday night.
Based on preliminary information from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 8 p.m. Nov. 18, a group of people appeared to be arguing in a lounge area of one of the buildings on the College of Southern Maryland’s La Plata Campus. An advisory message from CSM reported the man was seen around the Building and Industry building at the campus.
A security officer at the school who was monitoring surveillance cameras told investigators he thought he saw a gun but wasn’t sure, officers reported.
Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said the person thought to have had the gun left the area prior to police arriving. The campus was initially put on lockdown status for about an hour and police searched the area but did not find anything.
Richardson said the lockdown was lifted and police continue to investigate to identify the suspect.
