A Mechanicsville man was killed Monday night, police report, when he tried to walk across a highway in the path of a pickup truck in New Market.
Roland Philip Tucker, 52, died at the scene of the 7:55 p.m. accident, according to the St. Mary’s sheriff’s office. Tucker was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of Route 5, near an intersection with New Market Turner Road, the sheriff’s office reports, and he failed to yield the right of way to the 2011 Ford F-150 truck operated by Paul Downs of California.

Emergency medical services volunteers determined that the pedestrian had a faint pulse, placed him into an ambulance and initiated CPR efforts.
No other injuries were reported from the accident. Neither alcohol nor other drugs, or the truck’s speed, are considered to be factors in the collision, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office has requested that anyone with information about the accident contact sheriff’s Cpl. Brian Connelly at 301-475-4200, ext. 9010.
