The state medical examiner’s office has ruled that a Hollywood man’s death last week was a suicide, carried out with a contact gunshot wound to the head, and police report that his wounded wife is still in critical care at a hospital.
James Daniel Dean, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Thursday night shootings at the couple’s home on Johnson Road, located off Route 245 near the St. Mary’s community’s crossroads, according to Maryland State Police. A helicopter crew flew 43-year-old Angela Dean from the scene to the Prince George’s Hospital Center.
“He shot her twice. Angela was hit in the arm, and in the chest,” a state police spokesperson said, before James Dean took his own life.
Shortly before midnight on Thursday night, police report, Angela Dean called 911 dispatchers to report that she was having an argument with her husband and that he was loading a gun. During the phone call, which lasted less than one minute, police report, noises that sounded like gunshots were heard in the background.
State police report that their troopers and St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, forced their way into the residence and found James Dean on the living room floor with the apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Angela Dean was found nearby, and she was given initial treatment at the scene for her gunshot injuries before she was flown to the hospital.
“She was able to make a brief statement to those [troopers] who were there with her, at the scene,” Elena Russo, the police spokesperson, said. The Deans had only lived at that address for a short while, in an in-law style suite attached to the rest of the house.
“They had just moved in,” Russo said, “in the late fall.”
The couple got married about a year ago, she said.
