A Port Tobacco man died in a single-vehicle crash in Welcome on Sunday morning, the Maryland State Police reported.

This is Charles County’s first traffic fatality of the year.

Police responded to a report of an accident at about 1:16 a.m. Jan. 26.

David Edward Stott, 52, was driving a blue 2008 Ford F-150 truck on Route 6 just east of Melody Acres Drive. Upon arrival, troopers found the truck off of the road along the tree line. A preliminary investigation revealed the truck left the roadway for an unknown reason and struck several trees.

Police said Stott died on the scene. He was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.
