Vendors sought for April wedding show
Applications are now available for vendors at a wedding show at Greenwell State Park in Hollywood, to be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, under two large wedding tents on the grounds of historic Rosedale Manor.
The wedding show’s grand prize will be a free rental of the Historic Manor House, donated by the Greenwell Foundation. The free-admission event also will feature cake and food tastings, Natural Looks by Victoria’s “Creating a Beautiful Bridal Look” beauty demonstration, self-guided tours of Rosedale Manor and the rose garden, live entertainment provided by Elite Beatz, a complimentary photo booth provided by Hold That Pose and giveaways and raffle prizes. Realtors helps seniors for holidays
The Southern Maryland Association of Realtors held its fourth annual Secret Santa for Seniors in December to benefit elderly residents. Realtors and affiliate members provided gifts for 209 nursing home residents. The event was spearheaded by the Community Action and Realtor Excellence Committee of SMAR. Items were purchased, donated and wrapped by committee members and other volunteers.
Southern States selling FFA emblems
From Feb. 19 to March 24, Southern States is supporting Future Farmers of America by selling FFA emblems for $1.
“We are deeply appreciative of Southern States and their assistance to raise financial support for FFA and heighten community awareness about our organization,” said Molly Ball, president of the National FFA Foundation. “Funds raised through the sale of the FFA emblem at Southern States stores will support FFA at the local, state and national level and ensure that we’re able to continue to develop students’ leadership, growth and career success potential.”
The emblems, signed by purchasers, will be displayed in the store. Proceeds are split between the local FFA chapter, the state FFA association and the National FFA Foundation.
SMADC gets sustainable growth award
The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission received the 2014 Maryland Sustainable Growth Commission Award for Leadership and Service at a reception in Annapolis on Feb. 5.
The award, presented by MSGC Chairman John Laria, recognized SMADC’s “demonstrated commitment to connecting farms and food to residents, creating healthy communities and helping transition former tobacco farmers to prosperous alternatives.” Members of SMADC were present to receive the award and a citation from the Maryland General Assembly presented by Del Sally Y. Credit union helps warm hearts, hands
Educational Systems Federal Credit Union employees and volunteers have donated more than 200 items, including gloves, scarves, hats and hygiene kits, to help homeless students in St. Mary’s, Charles, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. School student service coordinators in each county facilitated the distribution of items as needed to students and their families.
“We are happy to offer help in any way that we can to members of our education community,” Chris Conway, president/CEO of Educational Systems FCU, said in a statement. “Our employees and volunteers came together for one cause, to warm the hearts and hands of students during this very cold winter.”

Scholarship program accepting nominees
Nominations for the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program will be accepted until March 14 at kohlskids.com. Kohl’s department stores encourage adults to nominate outstanding young people 6 to 18 who have made positive impacts in their communities for $400,000 in scholarships and prizes. Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card, and nearly 200 will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward higher education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for higher education, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.
PSC addresses rates for energy suppliers
The Maryland Public Service Commission has alerted Maryland energy customers who have contracted with retail energy suppliers that the recent spate of extremely cold temperatures may affect their rates if they have variable rate contracts with retail energy suppliers.
