A Waldorf man accidentally shot himself and claimed a stranger did it.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday, Charles County sheriff’s officers were called to the 1500 block of Stonecat Court in Waldorf after someone reported a shooting.

The man called 911 and said he had been shot by an unknown man while stopped at a stop sign near his home. He told police he drove home before calling 911.

When officers arrived, they noticed the man had gunshot wounds to his leg, but his story did not add up due to a lack of evidence to support it, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The man was taken to a hospital where detectives further questioned him. After a short time, he admitted to accidentally shooting himself while attempting to unload a black powder gun at his house.

Officer J. Austin is investigating.
