A St. Leonard woman has been charged with child abuse after Maryland State Police investigated a domestic incident which resulted in a 6-month-old child being flown to a Washington, D.C., hospital Wednesday.

According to a press release from the MSP Prince Frederick barrack, at about 10:43 p.m. Feb. 26, police responded to a 911 call at a location in St. Leonard. When troopers arrived, they learned a 6-month-old child and a 2-year-old girl had allegedly been injured by their mother, who, police said, was intoxicated. Police said the children were injured as a result of a dispute with the children’s father. During the incident, the mother allegedly attempted to pull the children away from the father, in the process causing injuries to the children. Another child, 3 years old, also was involved in the argument, but was not hurt.

Police called emergency medical services to the scene, and the infant, due to its injuries, was taken to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., by MSP Trooper 2 helicopter for treatment. The 2-year-old girl reportedly had noticeable injuries, and she and the 3-year-old were taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital for treatment and evaluation. The children were later released to other family members under the direction of Calvert County Child Protective Services.

During the investigation, police said the mother was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital after she made several suicidal statements. She was held there for psychiatric evaluation.

The Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division, Central South Region, investigators were then contacted and responded to assume the investigation, according to the press release. With assistance from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab, a search and seizure warrant was executed on the St. Leonard residence.

The mother was released from MedStar and was charged with second-degree child abuse, two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of child endangerment while under the influence of alcohol. She was jailed at the Calvert County Detention Center pending a hearing with the district court commissioner.
