A Prince Frederick man fell to his death Friday while operating a chainsaw in a tree on his property Friday, according to a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office report.

The sheriff’s office responded to 80 Hidden Spring Trail just after 5 p.m. for a report of a possible unconscious person. About a hundred yards to the left of the residence, in a wooded area, responders found Keith Kaatz, 49, lying on his back.

Kaatz was not breathing, did not have a pulse and had obvious signs of head trauma. Next to him was a blue ball cap and a chainsaw that was not running, according to the report.

Also lying near Kaatz was a 12-foot-long tree branch. It appeared Kaatz had been using the chainsaw to cut a tree near the area where he fell, as the branch matched a missing limb on a tree just above the area he was cutting on the tree with the chainsaw, the report states.

Emergency Medical Services personnel soon arrived on the scene, and at 5:20 p.m., a member of Calvert Advanced Life Support pronounced Kaatz dead on the scene.

Det. Cameron of the Criminal Investigations Bureau and members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office concurred that the death appeared accidental, the report states.

The thoughts and prayers of the sheriff’s office are with Kaatz and his family, said Capt. Steve Jones, a spokesperson for the office, adding that using chainsaws and cutting trees are dangerous activities, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine Kaatz’s actual cause of death.
