Plum Point Elementary and Middle schools are temporarily without power as of Thursday morning following an auto accident in the westbound lane of Plum Point Road, said Kim Roof, director of student services for Calvert County Public Schools.
“Power is being restored at this time,” Roof said. “We’re waiting to hear that it will be back up to both schools.”
The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. Thursday and damaged a power line that connects to the neighboring schools.
Roof said Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has been on the scene since 10 a.m. and has intermittent power working at the elementary school but not with the middle school yet.
She said staff from the central office are at the schools to make sure everything runs smoothly with the emergency equipment the schools use when the power goes out.
Because of the time of day this event occurred, most classrooms have a lot of natural light coming in, so instruction does not need to stop, Roof said. Depending on the type of event and time of day it occurs, students are sometimes moved within the school to ensure safety.
“So far,” Roof said, “everything is the status quo.”
